Aline, this is your second visit to the rehabilitation centre. Despite coming from halfway across the globe, enduring a 15-hour flight, you’ve returned. Can you explain why you’re back for more treatment?
The first time I was here, I made significant progress. I’m back to manage my pain and continue rehabilitation. I had surgery with Dr. Jeanne and Dr. Jimmy Hales, but my pain was still severe. However, with ongoing treatment and medication, most of my chronic neuropathic pain syndrome is under control. Previously, I couldn’t sleep or lie down without pain. I couldn’t even hold a conversation due to the intensity of the discomfort. I was on heavy medication, including hourly morphine.
The problem was primarily neuropathic pain. I couldn’t sleep or lie down. I spent entire nights and up to 23 or 24 hours sitting in a chair. With the doctor’s treatment plan, which included adjusting my medication, I’m now able to sleep and lie down. I believe my quality of life will improve significantly. Previously, I had to take morphine every hour, but now I only need it three times a day.
After an initial assessment and evaluation of prior and current exams, we decided to try spinal cord stimulation. Although the trial wasn’t successful for a permanent implant, we were able to adjust Elise’s medication to improve her daily routine and boost the effectiveness of the rehabilitation program.
Regarding the rehabilitation program, I’ve been doing physiotherapy and heat treatments to alleviate my neck pain, which was so severe I couldn’t turn my head. I’m now able to lie in bed which is a significant change, and I’m hopeful that in a few months I’ll see further improvement.
After four months of treatment, I’m sleeping better, taking significantly less medication (only three times a day), and enjoying a better quality of life. I’m looking forward to returning and continuing the effort to manage my pain and improve my daily routine. I also have some procedures scheduled with Dr. Vale, which I had to postpone due to an infection, but I’m confident I’ll be back to complete them and continue my journey to reduce my back pain.
On behalf of the entire staff at the rehabilitation center and the hospital, we wish Elise all the best and hope to see her again soon. Aline, in turn, expressed her gratitude for the care and treatment received, as well as the kindness of everyone at the hospital. She looks forward to her next visit.
